NCC launches Device Checker to verify phones—not surveillance
NCC rolled out its Device Checker Platform Thursday, letting consumers verify if phones are genuine before buying. The system checks IMEI numbers against approved devices—counterfeit, cloned, or unapproved units get flagged. NCC Zonal Controller emphasized this is strictly for device identification and regulatory compliance, not surveillance. "It does not access personal data, messages, photographs, contacts, or financial information," the Controller said at a press conference in the commission's zonal office.
Consumers can check any device at the NCC portal by entering the 15-digit IMEI (dial *#06# to find it). Manufacturers, importers, and dealers must secure Type Approval and register on the platform. NCC built a mobile app so authorized stakeholders can scan IMEIs and upload data directly. In Kano, a significant number of dealers have already secured licences through the streamlined process. Sensitization sessions held in Lagos and other regions walked importers through compliance requirements.
The platform aims to clean up Nigeria's device market as the digital economy expands. Substandard phones compromise network quality and consumer safety. NCC advises buying only from licensed dealers and verifying status before payment. For complaints or help, call the toll-free 315 consumer line.
Next time you're eyeing that "London used" phone at Computer Village or a deal on Jiji, will you check the IMEI first or trust the seller's word?
