NCC unveiled a mobile app Thursday letting authorised manufacturers, importers, distributors and dealers scan phone IMEIs and upload data directly to its Device Checker platform. The tool targets Nigeria's fragmented distribution chain—where devices pass through multiple hands before reaching buyers—making it harder to trace non-compliant units. Consumers can already check device approval status via the wider Device Checker system before purchase.

The regulator says the app streamlines Type Approval compliance and helps trace counterfeit, cloned or unauthorised phones back through the supply chain. NCC also reported progress licensing phone dealers in Kano State and running sensitisation sessions with importers in Lagos.

TechCabal's October 20 analysis highlighted how the informal "fairly used" market often lacks documentation, complicating enforcement. The app adds a data collection layer across the chain, but the real test is whether it can actually pinpoint where non-compliant devices enter the market.

If you're buying a phone, check Device Checker first. If you're in the trade, the app is now part of your compliance toolkit—register and start scanning.
