NCC registers 231M phones, launches verification to block fake devices - here's how to check yours
The NCC has automatically registered approximately 231 million telecommunications devices already on Nigerian networks as part of its new Device Checker system to prevent counterfeit and cloned phones from accessing services. Director Edoyemi Ogoh confirmed during Tuesday's Abuja briefing that existing subscribers need take no action - their devices are already verified in the system.
New phones, tablets or SIM-enabled devices must now pass NCC verification before connecting to networks, as counterfeit equipment can interfere with network infrastructure and degrade service for all users in a cell site. To check your device's status, dial *315# or visit the NCC's Device Checker portal. Retrieve your IMEI number by dialing *#06#. If your device shows as unverified, contact your seller for replacement or report via NCC's toll-free 315 helpline.
Ogoh emphasized the system doesn't access personal data - it only uses device identification information for verification. This builds on the NCC's Quality of Service Regulations introduced in 2024, which set performance standards for operators. The initiative aims to improve overall network quality by preventing additional non-compliant devices from entering the market, with enforcement supported by collaboration with Customs, manufacturers and dealers.
