NCC warns device dealers to comply or face network restrictions
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned manufacturers, importers, distributors and dealers of SIM-enabled devices to comply with its type approval and verification requirements or risk having non-compliant devices blocked from accessing Nigerian mobile networks. The warning, issued October 20, 2026, cites the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, Type Approval Regulations 2024 and Business Rules 2024, which mandate that every device model obtain NCC Type Approval before importation, assembly, distribution or sale.
The NCC requires that each device’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) be submitted through the approved compliance process for verification prior to sale. Dealers must check existing stock, work with suppliers to resolve any compliance gaps, and ensure new imports meet requirements before entering the market. The Commission says it is strengthening monitoring through technology-enabled verification and collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service to reconcile import records and enforce duties.
Non‑compliant devices could be restricted from networks once the automated system is fully implemented. The NCC encourages businesses unsure of the process to seek guidance via its onboarding channels, visit www.ncc.gov.ng/DeviceCheckerGuide or call 315 for assistance.
Will you verify your devices’ IMEI registration now, work with suppliers to clear any pending approvals, or risk losing network access for your inventory?
