The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a health advisory following the latest Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak update in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). NCDC Director General Jide Idris confirmed Nigeria is on 'high alert' with all preparatory activities underway to combat any potential threat, noting measures will be reviewed as the situation evolves.

The advisory requires travelers from countries with active or relevant EVD transmission to complete the Health Declaration Form as part of enhanced public health surveillance, while passengers from all other countries are currently exempt. NCDC urged the public to remain vigilant for EVD symptoms, promptly seek medical attention, and report any relevant travel or exposure history when seeking care.

As of September 20, 2026, the DRC reported 7,672 confirmed EVD cases including 3,699 deaths, with 886 patients currently hospitalized in isolation. This represents 58 new confirmed cases and 23 deaths since the previous report on September 19, with new cases concentrated in Ituri (38), North Kivu (14), Haut-Uélé (5), and Tshopo (1) provinces. Among Bundibugyo virus cases, 1,879 patients have recovered, and 79.9% of identified case contacts are under follow-up in affected provinces.

The NCDC emphasized its commitment to protecting Nigerians through evidence-based surveillance and preparedness, following its Dynamic Risk Assessment conducted with public health experts and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Will you complete the health declaration form if traveling from affected areas, or know where to seek help if you develop symptoms after recent travel to Central Africa?
