NCDC monitors Ebola threat as Nigeria strengthens defenses amid DRC-Uganda outbreak
NCDC confirms Nigeria has zero Ebola cases but is boosting surveillance after 88 deaths in DRC and a Ugandan imported case. WHO labeled the DRC-Uganda Bundibugyo strain outbreak a global health emergency—this strain lacks vaccines/treatments. As of May 17, NCDC DG Jide Idris stated they're enhancing lab readiness, infection control, and public awareness while coordinating with Port Health Services. Symptoms include fever, muscle pain, fatigue progressing to vomiting/diarrhea/bleeding. NCDC urges Nigerians to practice good hand hygiene, reject misinformation, and promptly report unusual illnesses—citing Nigeria's successful 2014 Ebola containment as proof systems work. No travel/trade restrictions advised by WHO.
