Nigeria's health agencies have issued a nationwide alert urging doctors and healthcare workers to intensify infection control measures amid ongoing Lassa fever transmission. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) warned that the disease remains a critical public health threat during the dry season (Nov-Apr), with healthcare workers facing significant risks. Director-General Jide Idris emphasized protecting frontline personnel as a national priority, noting many infected workers are doctors and nurses. Clinicians are advised to suspect Lassa fever in persistent fevers unresponsive to malaria treatment, along with symptoms like headache, vomiting and bleeding. Early isolation and strict infection protocols—including PPE use, hand hygiene and environmental disinfection—are critical to prevent facility outbreaks. Healthcare facilities must ensure supply availability and staff training, with triage systems and isolation areas strengthened. The advisory stresses immediate reporting of symptoms and avoiding self-medication to reduce severe outcomes.
