NCDC Targets Lassa Fever Reduction in 10 Years
Nigeria's NCDC aims to reduce Lassa fever incidence to an appreciable level within 10 years, Director-General Dr. Olajide Idris told Channels Television. Vaccine development takes time, he explained, noting the death rate remains high at 22% this year with 318 confirmed cases and 70 deaths. Five states - Edo, Ondo, Taraba, Bauchi and Ebonyi - account for 91% of infections. Early treatment is possible but delayed presentation makes it fatal. NCDC is deploying teams to improve case management and infection control in affected states.
