The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) denies imposing candidates in its recent primary elections, stating its National Secretariat played no role in 'picking, choosing, or imposing' aspirants. National Secretary Barrister Ikenna Enekweizu said the process relied on consultation, consensus-building, and stakeholder engagement through established state-level leadership structures. Aspirants were directed to engage with caucus leaders, stakeholders, and grassroots members who conducted consultations and made recommendations based on local political realities. In the South-East zone, presidential candidate Peter Obi joined with an existing network including former governors Sam Egwu, Okwesilieze Nwodo, and Achike Udenwa, who served as caucus heads conducting stakeholder consultations. The NDC clarified that aspirants disagreeing with stakeholder recommendations were not excluded but could test their popularity through grassroots primaries without prejudice. Reports of premature declarations or process complaints were referred to the party's appeal panel and leadership for resolution. The party noted efforts to encourage female participation while considering serving lawmakers' interests and announced plans for a broad reconciliation process to heal divisions post-primaries, as resolved at yesterday's NEC meeting. Enekweizu emphasized the NDC's role was to welcome new members, reassure them of commitment to fairness, and direct them to appropriate caucus structures. This defense comes amid allegations following the primaries as the party prepares for future elections.

Given the NDC's emphasis on internal democracy through grassroots consultations and stakeholder engagement, how do you assess whether this approach genuinely prevents candidate imposition or merely shifts influence to unelected caucus leaders, and what does this mean for your confidence in the party's electoral integrity ahead of 2027?
