NDC implements strict screening to prevent Obi-Kwankwaso popularity ride
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has implemented measures to prevent aspirants from riding on Peter Obi's and Rabiu Kwankwaso's popularity to power. Party spokesman Osa Director, appearing on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily, emphasized that unlike 2023, the opposition party will be thorough in screening aspirants.
The NDC learned from the Labour Party experience where many diaspora participants who had never engaged in politics rushed to join, likely seeking to capitalize on the Obi-Kwankwaso wave. "We are conscious of all that. Even during screening, most were asked about their vision and credentials. If you are not on the ground, who is going to vote for you?" Director asked.
In 2023, several relatively unknown aspirants joined LP and NNPP and even won, but months later defected to the ruling APC. The NDC now checks pedigrees and commitments, rejecting those without verifiable dedication to party principles. "We are not going to be business as usual," Director stated, noting they've learned from past mistakes.
