The National Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikenna Enekweizu, said the party has introduced an oath of loyalty requiring candidates to sign an affidavit to limit defections. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Enekweizu dismissed claims the move is unconstitutional, stating the NDC constitution provides for such affidavits and that members of any association are bound by its rules. The NDC leadership, including National Chairman Moses Cleopas, explained the decision responds to defections observed in other parties, particularly the Labour Party after the 2023 elections, which weakened those platforms. Enekweizu emphasized the party wants to build a lasting structure, not just a vehicle for winning elections, and noted that the oath applies mainly to national and state assembly members, not the presidential candidate Peter Obi or vice‑presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, who were exempted by administrative decision. The party says the oath protects its institutional integrity and ensures elected officials remain loyal until their tenure ends. No details were given on enforcement mechanisms or penalties for refusing to sign. Observers will watch whether the oath withstands legal scrutiny and whether it reduces the trend of elected officials jumping ship after securing office.
