NDC VP Kwankwaso hints at fuel subsidy return if elected in 2027
NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso said the party would consider reintroducing fuel subsidy, among other measures, to lower petrol prices if elected in 2027. Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today on Thursday, he declared that Nigeria's energy costs are too high and must be reduced in citizens' interest, adding that the party is prepared to take whatever steps necessary, including subsidy, to bring fuel prices down.
Kwankwaso also told voters that political parties and candidates will be judged by their performance in office, not by pre-election promises, saying that after four years it is what a leader has done that works for or against them. The NDC's stance comes amid widespread public concern over high fuel prices that have increased transportation and living costs across the country.
The party has not detailed how a revived subsidy would be funded or what other measures it might pursue, but the signal indicates a willingness to intervene directly in the petroleum market to ease the burden on households and businesses.
