NDC works to harmonise Obi-Kwankwaso differences for 2027 single ticket

Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and ally of Rabiu Kwankwaso, says the party is harmonising areas of difference between its presidential candidate Peter Obi and running mate Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 election. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday, Galadima stated Obi and Kwankwaso are “on the same page” despite having contested the 2023 presidential election on different platforms—Obi under the Labour Party and Kwankwaso under the New Nigeria Peoples Party—and with different policy blueprints.

This alignment matters because it could unite two significant opposition blocs ahead of the 2027 race, challenging incumbent President Bola Tinubu (seeking a second term) and Atiku Abubakar, who has moved to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In 2023, Obi polled 6,101,533 votes, Atiku 6,984,520, and Tinubu 8,794,726. The NDC says it has chaired meetings to resolve grey areas and expects both leaders to accept its recommendations, describing the Obi-Kwankwaso pairing as a “single ticket” for the country.

Voters should note that the Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027. With the NDC moving to inaugurate its campaign council and grant Obi and Kwankwaso nomination powers, watch for further details on policy harmonisation and consider how a unified opposition ticket might influence your voting decision.
