NDPC Investigates Remita, Sterling Bank Over Data Breach
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into Remita Payment Services Ltd. and Sterling Bank following allegations of a data breach. A statement by Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal at NDPC, confirmed a Notice of Investigation was served on the firms, with relevant parties currently supplying information.
The investigation aims to ensure data subjects are protected through adequate technical and organizational measures. It will assess the types of personal data involved, the breach's scope, risks to individuals, and any mitigation steps taken. NDPC's National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, warned that all organizations using digital payment systems without complying with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, will face scrutiny as part of broader efforts to maintain ecosystem integrity.
If you use Remita or bank with Sterling, monitor your accounts for suspicious activity and update passwords. Watch for NDPC's final report, which may include enforcement actions. Digital payment operators must review compliance with NDP Act requirements immediately.
