Scholar-journalist Max Amuchie has introduced a set of original concepts to analyze state decay and sovereignty, including the Insecurity Triad, the Trinity of State Decay, and the Decoupling Sovereignty Index (DSI). The Insecurity Triad identifies Money (ransom economies from kidnapping), Land (banditry controlling territory), and Mind (terrorism shaping loyalty) as interlocking vectors that produce rival sovereignty. When sustained, these vectors trigger the Trinity of State Decay: territorial loss, institutional weakening, and psychological withdrawal of citizen trust, which reinforce each other and give rise to an Institutional Mirage (formal state structures without real authority) and a Shadow Order (alternative authorities like armed groups). Mechanisms sustaining this decay include the Ransom Economy (kidnapping as revenue), Pacification Bargaining (informal concessions to armed groups), and Constitutional Erasure (armed groups redrawing maps by force). Amuchie also proposes an Architecture of Resurrection for rebuilding state legitimacy through redesign of authority, trust, and institutions, asking how territorial control, institutional confidence, and excluded populations can be restored. These frameworks aim to provide a vocabulary for understanding and potentially reversing sovereignty decay in Nigeria and the Global South.
