The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit's 2025 Annual Report reveals tax crimes and fraud accounted for 51% of all financial crime intelligence reports disseminated to authorities last year. Specifically, tax crimes made up 30% (the largest single category) while fraud followed at 21%, significantly outpacing money laundering at 15% and narcotics trafficking at 10%.

This concentration of tax and fraud cases highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in Nigeria's financial system, with the country losing an estimated $17.72 billion annually to illicit financial flows—representing approximately 20% of Africa's total $88.6 billion in losses. These losses, according to Finance Minister Doris Uzoka-Anite, directly undermine Nigeria's capacity to fund essential infrastructure and public services for citizens.

In response, regulators have intensified monitoring efforts: the SEC directed capital market entities to subscribe to Nigeria Sanctions NigSac Alerts system in August 2025 following terrorism financing designations, while the NFIU reiterated in October 2025 that international travelers carrying over $10,000 in cash must declare funds at point of departure. Banks submitted 92% of the 42,082 Suspicious Transaction Reports filed with NFIU in 2025.

For finance professionals and frequent international travelers, these developments mean enhanced scrutiny of transactions and stricter compliance requirements—will you adjust your financial practices or travel preparations accordingly?
