NGX Erases Four-Day Gain, Investors Lose N1.17tn in Single-Day Sell-Off
Investors on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) recorded a staggering N1.17 trillion loss on Tuesday as the market reversed its four-day bullish streak. The All-Share Index plunged 1,806 points to 246,723.57, dragging market capitalization down from N160.42 trillion to N159.26 trillion—a 0.73% single-day drop that cut year-to-date returns to 58.55%.
The sell-off was led by Thomas Wyatt Nigeria (-9.97% to N2.89) and AVA Capital (-9.60% to N8.95), while UPDCREIT topped gainers with a 10% jump to N14.85. Trading exploded to 3.91 billion shares worth N32.38 billion—nearly triple Monday's volume—with Fortis Global Insurance dominating 84% of activity.
Despite 28 stocks advancing versus 27 declining, the broad-based collapse wiped out nearly N1.2 trillion in paper wealth. For investors holding NGX-exposed portfolios, this raises immediate questions about rebalancing or holding through volatility—especially with the naira's fluctuating exchange rate adding currency risk to local equity returns.
