NHRC demands Air Force explanation for civilian deaths in airstrikes
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urgently called on the Nigerian Air Force to explain repeated airstrikes that have allegedly killed civilians in Yobe, Niger, and Zamfara States between April and May 2026. NHRC Executive Secretary Tony Ojukwu expressed serious concerns about what he described as a troubling pattern of civilian deaths during counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations, noting incidents at Jilli Market in Yobe, Shiroro Market in Niger, and Tumfa Market in Zamfara.
While acknowledging the Federal Government's duty to combat insecurity, the commission stressed that military operations must comply with international humanitarian standards protecting civilians, including principles of distinction between combatants and civilians, proportionality in force use, and necessity. Ojukwu questioned why similar incidents continue despite earlier assurances that procedures would be reviewed to avoid civilian harm, asking "Why does this keep happening, and for how long will Nigerians continue to witness such tragedies?"
The NHRC demanded detailed explanations from the Air Force, independent investigations into all reported cases, and insisted that affected families deserve justice, compensation, and adequate support. With civilian deaths reportedly involving women and children, the commission warned that treating civilian populations as "unintended losses" in security operations violates fundamental human rights.
