Nigeria’s Sanctions Committee has added 54 individuals and entities to its terrorism financiers list, including Boko Haram, ISWAP, Ansaru, Lakurawa, and individuals such as Simon Ekpa and Tukur Mamu. The designation, based on the Nigeria Sanctions List framework, obliges banks and other financial institutions to freeze assets of those listed without prior notice and to report any suspicious transactions to the National Security Adviser’s office and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

The move aims to choke funding for terrorist groups operating in the North‑East and elsewhere, aligning with FATF standards. Financial firms that fail to comply risk regulatory penalties and reputational damage, while ordinary citizens may see delays or blocks on remittances linked to designated persons.

If you work in banking, fintech, or handle cross‑border payments, review your customer‑screening processes against the updated sanctions list, ensure your compliance team is updated, and file any suspicious activity reports promptly. Staying vigilant helps curb terror financing and keeps your institution on the right side of the law.
