Nigeria’s Mixed 4x400m relay team of Samson Nathaniel, Taiwo Kudoro, Chidi Okezie and Patience Okon-George finished second in Heat 2 at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, clocking a season’s best 3:12.88 to secure an automatic qualification spot for the 2027 World Championships in Beijing. They trailed South Africa (3:12.77) but beat Germany (3:12.99). This comes after Nigeria’s earlier qualification from the Mixed 4x100m relay, where Favour Ashe, Jennifer Chukwuka-Obi, Chidera Ezeakor and Maria Thompson set an African record of 40.24 seconds.

Having two relay spots now guaranteed, Nigeria boosts its medal prospects and demonstrates growing depth in sprint relays ahead of Beijing 2027. However, the women’s 4x400m team could not compete for qualification because it could not field a complete lineup—some athletes had raced less than 30 minutes earlier, underscoring the importance of recovery and squad planning at the highest level.

With these qualifications secured, fans can look forward to seeing Nigeria’s relay teams in action at the 2027 World Championships. Coaches and athletes should note the need for proper rotation and recovery to avoid lineup issues, while upcoming events offer more chances to earn additional quota spots. Will Nigeria’s relay squads maintain this momentum and convert these berths into medals on the global stage?
