Nigeria Civil Society Warns Against Foreign Military Deployment
A coalition of Nigerian civil society groups, academics, and legal experts has issued a strong warning against the deployment of US troops in Nigeria. The group argues that foreign military involvement undermines national sovereignty and constitutional governance, citing Nigeria's historical resistance to neo-colonial defence pacts like the 1962 Anglo-Nigerian Defence Pact and the 2005 Bilateral Immunity Agreement with the US. The coalition insists any foreign troop deployment must comply with Nigeria's Constitution, requiring National Assembly approval for treaties. With 100 US troops already in Nigeria (part of a planned 200-troop deployment), the group emphasizes Nigeria's capacity to handle security challenges independently through military modernization and intelligence coordination. They call for transparency and leadership in West Africa's anti-neo-colonial stance.
