Nigeria Ebola risk low - WHO states ninth international emergency
WHO declares Nigeria's Ebola risk low compared to neighboring West African countries, with Executive Director Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu confirming the assessment during an Arise Television interview Tuesday. This marks only the ninth time in history that an Ebola outbreak has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
According to Ihekweazu, Uganda remains the only country outside Democratic Republic of Congo with confirmed Ebola cases. The outbreak has already spread to multiple countries, with over 300 confirmed cases reported throughout the DR Congo. Health officials emphasize this requires internationally coordinated response.
Nigeria's preparedness stands at 59% according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Director General. The Federal Government has placed FCT and nine states on high alert as preventive measures against potential Ebola entry into the country. Health officials continue monitoring situation amid concerns about containing the virus with existing healthcare infrastructure.
