Nigeria's food inflation fell to 8.89% in January 2026, the lowest in 14 years since August 2011's 8.66%. NBS attributes this to reduced prices of water yams, eggs, green peas, groundnut oil, soya beans, palm oil, and maize grains. CPPE warns this could undermine farmers' incomes despite boosting consumer purchasing power. The body notes price easing extending beyond food, suggesting real disinflation rather than temporary volatility. Sustained declines may weaken agricultural production and rural purchasing power, requiring measures to protect farmers' incomes and ensure food security.
