Nigeria formally bids for UNHRC membership

Nigeria has formally declared its bid for UN Human Rights Council membership for 2027-2029. Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar announced the candidature in a video statement, describing the council as vital for human rights dialogue and conflict prevention. Nigeria plans to finance safe schools and strengthen learning environments as part of security efforts. The minister emphasized Nigeria's commitment to protecting children's rights and religious freedom while highlighting economic reforms and climate action as development priorities. Nigeria previously served on the council until 2020.
