Nigeria Governors weigh CNG-based fare cuts after Abuja meeting

State governors said they are considering cuts to transportation fares nationwide through the proposed National Affordable CNG Transit Programme (NACTP). The idea emerged from the 3rd Nigeria Governors’ Forum meeting held on Wednesday, August 25, 2026 in Abuja, chaired by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. The forum received a presentation on NACTP, a state-led plan to convert vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG) and use the lower operating cost to reduce passenger fares, with state support for conversions, fleets and infrastructure plus fare commitments from operators.

Governors noted the initiative’s potential to ease transportation costs and agreed to further examine its financing and implementation framework, according to a statement by AbdulRazaq. The meeting also covered a presentation by Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr Jumoke Oduwole on state participation in CANEX Weekend 2026 and the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2027, both slated for Lagos. Attendees included governors from Imo, Borno, Bayelsa, Cross River, Jigawa, Ondo and Nasarawa states, plus deputy governors from Katsina, Yobe, Niger and Oyo.

If adopted, NACTP could lower commuting expenses for millions, though details on funding, rollout timeline and which operators will join remain under discussion. Will state governments move quickly to fund CNG conversions and secure operator agreements to deliver real fare relief for daily commuters?
