The Federal Government installed 707,765 electricity meters across Nigeria in the first half of 2026, a 71% increase from the 412,792 meters installed in the same period of 2025, according to Nairametrics' review of NERC quarterly data. Installations totaled 357,495 in Q1 and 350,270 in Q2, up from 187,161 and 225,631 respectively in 2025. By end-June 2026, 7,743,839 of the 12,589,486 active registered customers were metered, giving a nationwide metering rate of 61.51%, leaving over 4.8 million customers without meters.

The bulk of new meters came from the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), which accounted for 205,486 installations (58.67% of H1 total) under the World Bank-financed $500 million project. Other frameworks contributed: MAP 123,833 meters, MAF 13,028, DisCo-financed 7,643 and Vendor-financed 280.

To protect unmetered customers, NERC continues to apply monthly energy caps based on each DisCo's gross energy receipts and metered consumption, limiting what can be billed to those without meters. The government also plans to deploy 1.56 million meters by end-2026 after resolving an earlier procurement dispute with local manufacturers.

If you remain unmetered, you are shielded by these energy caps; you can check with your Distribution Company for meter rollout schedules and consider registering under the DISREP or MAP programmes to get a meter installed, which will improve billing transparency and help you monitor actual consumption.
