Nigeria jumps to 38th globally in AI responsibility ranking, tops Africa

Nigeria rose 42 places to rank 38th globally with a score of 45.93 in the latest Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI), overtaking Egypt and Kenya to become Africa's highest-ranked country. The ranking, published by Cape Town-based think tank GIRAI, evaluates 135 nations across five pillars including inclusion, ethics, labour skills, trust safety, and public service AI use.

This recognition highlights Nigeria's deliberate AI governance progress through initiatives like the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS), the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program for AI skills training, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act with GAID 2025 directives protecting children's data. As Africa's AI economy is projected to contribute $1.2 trillion to continental GDP by 2030, Nigeria's strengthening governance framework enhances its appeal for AI talent, innovation, and investment.
