The Nigerian Government is considering sanctions on Air Peace, United Nigeria Airlines and other carriers after data showed nearly six in ten domestic flights were delayed in August 2026. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority reported 4,765 delays out of 7,961 scheduled flights, with Air Peace at 71% and United Nigeria Airlines at 76% delay rates.

For passengers, this means frequent disruptions despite high airfares, especially on busy routes like Lagos-Abuja. Aviation expert Capt. John Ojikutu blames weak regulatory enforcement and airlines flying oversized planes on low-demand routes, citing poor business planning. He notes travelers know their rights but see little action when complaints are filed.

Ojikutu suggests airlines adopt a model like the former Nigerian Airways—using larger aircraft on major routes and smaller ones for regional connections—and proposes varying airport charges by traffic level to encourage operations beyond Lagos and Abuja. Passengers might face higher fares if sanctions are imposed, but could also see improved reliability if enforcement strengthens.

Will you check an airline’s on-time record before booking, consider alternative carriers for your next trip, or adjust travel plans to avoid peak congestion?
