Nigeria petrol supply falls 21% in July, inventories rise to 22.4 days

Nigeria’s domestic petrol supply fell 21% month-on-month to 25.8 million litres per day in July 2026, down from 32.5 million litres per day in June, according to the NMDPRA’s July factsheet. Consumption dropped even further, declining 25% to 35.7 million litres per day compared with 47.4 million litres per day the previous month. Despite the lower supply and demand, petrol stock sufficiency improved from 19.7 days to 22.4 days, giving a stronger buffer against market disruptions.

The regulator also reported that total daily petrol receipts decreased 10% to 45.5 million litres per day, driven by a 6.7 million litre per day drop in domestic supply, while imported petrol rose 9% to 19.7 million litres per day. Diesel receipts jumped 46% to 23.6 million litres per day, though domestic diesel supply slipped 3% and imports filled the gap. LPG was the only major product to see consumption growth, up 7% to 4.4 million litres per day.

Dangote Refinery remained the top supplier, producing 25.9 million litres per day of petrol and exporting 3.4 million litres per day, ending the month with 446.1 million litres in stock. Crude oil production stayed above 1.5 million barrels per day for the third straight month, and domestic crude supplied to local refineries reached 97.4% in Q2 2026.

With inventories rising but actual use falling, will the improved stock cushion prevent pump price hikes, or should consumers prepare for possible volatility in the coming months?
