Nigeria scored 25 out of 32 points in the 2026 Healthy NDCs Scorecard released by the Global Climate and Health Alliance on Wednesday, placing it alongside Colombia (29) and Cambodia (24) as the top three nations integrating health into their national climate plans. The scorecard evaluated health inclusion in Nationally Determined Contributions across eight categories: health impacts, air pollution, health sector action, health co-benefits, just transition, integrated governance, economics and finance, and monitoring and implementation, based on 132 countries’ 2035 climate plans submitted to the UNFCCC before August 2026.

Nigeria’s strong climate ambition was acknowledged, but the report warned that the country continues to face exceptionally high rates of air‑pollution mortality, underscoring that mentioning health in a plan is not enough without tying it to concrete emission‑reduction targets. Low‑ and middle‑income countries claimed 19 of the top 20 scores, showing they are leading on health‑climate linkage, while many high‑emitters such as the EU, China, Brazil and the UK mention health but fall short on the cuts needed to protect public health.

The report also singled out Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Paraguay for setting black‑carbon reduction targets, a key driver of both warming and toxic air. Will Nigeria follow through with specific emission cuts—especially on pollutants like black carbon, methane and HFCs—to turn its health‑climate ambition into real protection for its citizens, or will ambition remain unmatched by action?
