Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi are in Addis Ababa negotiating the transfer of more than 100 Nigerians detained in Ethiopian prisons. The officials announced the effort on Wednesday via Odumegwu-Ojukwu's verified X account, noting that four prisoners have died during the prolonged negotiations, judicial vetting and ratification process. They identified the facilities as Kaliti Prison and Aba Samuel Prison in Ethiopia.

The move matters because it addresses the welfare of Nigerians facing possible inhumane conditions abroad and seeks to prevent further loss of life. By invoking principles of humanity, justice and cooperation, the bilateral agreement aims to ensure that those who run afoul of host-country laws are treated with dignity and afforded their legal rights, reinforcing Nigeria's duty to protect its diaspora.

While the agreement is not yet signed, the government has not disclosed a timeline for the actual transfer or specific conditions for the returnees. Families awaiting news should monitor official channels for updates, and citizens abroad are reminded to respect local laws while knowing consular assistance remains available. Will the imminent transfer bring relief to families, and what safeguards will guarantee humane treatment for those returning?
