Nigeria participated in the 8th Africa Senior Enlisted Leader Conference (ASELC) held in Libreville, Gabon from September 14-17, 2026. The gathering brought together 127 senior enlisted leaders from 26 African countries alongside U.S., European, and NATO partners, focusing on developing non-commissioned officers who translate commander's intent into practical action on the ground.

For Nigeria, as a principal West African security actor engaged in counterterrorism against Boko Haram and ISWAP, border patrols, and Gulf of Guinea maritime security, this investment in enlisted leader development is critical. These NCOs train troops, maintain discipline, and ensure missions are executed effectively under pressure—especially vital for transnational threats that ignore national borders.

Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff emphasized that regional intelligence sharing, integrated border management, and joint operations are essential for shared threats, aligning with ASELC's goal of building professional trust between militaries. Nigeria has participated in ASELC since 2017 (Germany), with recent editions in Rome, Zambia, and Malawi. Will this continued investment in developing trusted, disciplined enlisted leaders translate into more effective joint operations when Nigeria faces its next cross-border security challenge?
