Nigeria Sets October 2026 Target for GIS-Enabled Alphanumeric Postcode System
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani announced at a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System Workshop that Nigeria will launch a GIS-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system by October 2026, assigning a unique code to every building, including those in rural areas. The workshop, held in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), brought together security and law enforcement agencies, emergency response institutions, government ministries, and development partners to discuss integrating the system into national operations.
The new system aims to replace the existing six-digit numeric postcodes, which have proven inadequate for precise location identification, especially in informal settlements and rapidly growing urban areas. By providing a trusted location layer, it is expected to enhance emergency response, public safety, logistics, e-commerce, national planning, and government service delivery, addressing long‑standing challenges in mail delivery and digital services that rely on accurate geospatial data.
NIPOST’s Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi emphasized that success depends on adoption, not just technology, noting that the system will give every location a verifiable GIS‑enabled code usable across institutions. The Federal Executive Council approved the implementation in March, and NIPOST is already modernizing its operations through digital payment partnerships and updated international parcel services.
Will this GIS‑based postcode finally solve Nigeria’s addressing challenges for businesses and residents, or will adoption face the same hurdles that have limited previous initiatives?
