Nigeria’s humanitarian affairs minister Bernard Doro announced plans for a new national resource center dedicated to people with sensory impairments, aiming to provide access to international knowledge and resources for special needs. The initiative, backed by former Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje and humanitarian stakeholders, was disclosed on April 25, 2026, with Doro emphasizing that accessibility must be built into design from the start, prioritizing digital solutions over retrofitting tools. Fatima Ganduje Abiola-Ajumobi, founder of Let’s Talk Humanity and a pioneer of the center, said the facility will enable Nigerians with sensory impairments to tap into global expertise and support systems available in more developed countries.

The center addresses a long-standing gap: many Nigerians with disabilities remain excluded from education, employment, and social protection programmes, with recent Ondo State findings showing 64 percent unaware of existing social protection benefits. By creating a centralized hub, the government hopes to reduce reliance on street begging—a concern Ganduje previously raised when urging Northern governors to invest in PWDs—and promote inclusive governance.

Details on the center’s location, launch date, and funding have not yet been disclosed. Stakeholders urge authorities to ensure the facility is accessible, digitally equipped, and linked to existing disability commissions across states to maximize impact.
