Defence Minister Christopher Musa announced that Nigeria and Türkiye have agreed to immediately deploy 200 Nigerian Special Forces for training in Türkiye, with joint defence equipment production and technology transfer also secured. Musa disclosed the deal in an interview on the sidelines of the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF2026) in Antalya, Türkiye, on Saturday, after talks with Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler. The forum, themed “Mapping Tomorrow, Managing Uncertainties,” ran Friday to Sunday and drew world leaders, ministers, and diplomats from about 150 countries, including 20 heads of state and 5,000 decision-makers.

The agreement aims to boost Nigeria’s counter-insurgency capabilities, leveraging Türkiye’s 40 years of counter-terrorism experience compared to Nigeria’s 17 years fighting asymmetric warfare. Plans for joint exercises later this year and co-production of military hardware were highlighted, with Musa noting Türkiye has been “like family” to Nigeria since 1960.

This intelligence matters because enhanced special forces training and local defence production could improve security outcomes in the Northeast and reduce reliance on imported arms. It also signals deeper defence-industrial collaboration that may create technical jobs and spur technology transfer.

Given these developments, should Nigerians expect faster progress against insurgency, and what local opportunities might arise from the planned defence production partnership?
