Nigeria urged to lead Africa energy agenda at 2026 Cape Town summit

African Energy Chamber Chairman N.J. Ayuk urged Nigeria to take an active role in shaping the continent’s energy agenda at the 2026 Africa Energy Week in Cape Town, scheduled for 12–16 October. Speaking ahead of the conference, Ayuk said the event is more than a gathering—it is a platform where countries compete for visibility, capital, partnerships, and influence, and Nigeria cannot afford to attend casually.

He noted that while Nigeria remains Africa’s top oil and gas producer with vast reserves, history alone no longer attracts capital. Investors now look for clear reforms, credible projects, strong institutions, and a serious commitment to engaging investors. Ayuk called on the country to move from potential to positioning, stressing that its gas reserves can serve as a practical bridge to a cleaner energy future, supporting power generation, industry, fertiliser, petrochemicals, domestic cooking, exports, and regional energy security.

For Nigerians, this means the country’s ability to attract investment directly affects electricity supply, industrial growth, and foreign‑exchange earnings. To benefit, Nigeria must present a coherent narrative of reform, showcase bankable gas projects, and coordinate federal agencies, regulators, operators, and state governments to speak with one clear, credible voice at the summit.
