On May 15, 2026, Nigeria experienced unprecedented coordinated school abductions across multiple regions. In Oyo State, armed terrorists abducted 46 students and teachers from Oriire LGA, killing one teacher and executing another victim. Simultaneously in Borno State, 42 schoolchildren were abducted from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira Uba. Additional attacks occurred in Zamfara (polytechnic students) and Ibadan (kidnapping of former minister's family members).

This latest wave follows a disturbing pattern of school abductions coinciding with politically sensitive periods: Chibok (2014, Jonathan campaign), Dapchi (2018, Buhari campaign), and now multiple attacks including the first in Southwest under Tinubu's administration. In response, President Tinubu approved recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and additional military bases along vulnerable corridors.

The attacks threaten education of over 50 million Nigerian children and risk parental withdrawals, worsening out-of-school statistics. Teachers' unions consider nationwide protests as schools transform from spaces of hope to theaters of fear. Are these attacks merely criminal activity or exploiting election cycles to maximize pressure on the government?
