Nigerian airlines warn of imminent shutdown over surging Jet A1 fuel costs

Airline operators in Nigeria, led by United Nigeria Airlines Chairman Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, warn that surging Jet A1 fuel prices could trigger aviation shutdowns within days as many carriers operate at their "last breath" with reserves nearly exhausted. Okonkwo accused fuel marketers of price manipulation, artificial scarcity, and black market activities, arguing costs are unjustifiably high and should not be passed to passengers.

The threat comes as Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) joins calls for intervention, warning that a shutdown would severely disrupt Nigeria's economy and travel sector. With airlines already facing possible grounding, the situation raises immediate concerns about flight availability, cargo operations, and broader economic impacts on businesses dependent on air transport.

Given the severity of the warning and the potential for imminent disruptions, what contingency plans should businesses and travelers consider if domestic flights face suspension or significant reductions in the coming days?
