The Maritime Component of Operation Whirl Stroke issued a safety advisory on Tuesday after rising water levels from the rainy season increased currents and turbulence on inland waterways, heightening the risk of boat accidents and loss of life or property. Lieutenant Commander Dusse Christopher Zakari urged mariners, boat operators, passengers and riverine residents to wear life jackets at all times, keep at least one life buoy on board, avoid overloading vessels, and carry essential safety gear such as working torchlights, spare spark plugs and tarpaulins.

Operators are also barred from polluting waterways with non-biodegradable waste and must restrict sailing to daylight hours between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with all maritime unions tasked to enforce the night-sailing ban. Boat operators must register with their respective unions and carry valid identification while on the water; violators face sanctions under existing regulations.

The advisory targets anyone engaged in economic activities on the rivers and creeks within the Joint Operations Area, aiming to prevent accidents as the rainy season intensifies. Unions are expected to enforce compliance among members, and authorities will monitor adherence to reduce fatalities and property loss.

If you operate a boat or rely on river transport, will you adjust your schedule to daylight hours, ensure every passenger has a life jacket, and verify your vessel carries the required safety equipment, or will you seek alternative routes during the restricted night period?
