Nigerian-born Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha ineligible for England's World Cup squad despite debut
Nigerian-born Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha made his England debut June 6 vs New Zealand, becoming the 5th-youngest Three Lions player ever and winning Player of the Match. However, he won't be eligible for the 2026 World Cup squad despite his performance.
This is because Ngumoha wasn't included in Thomas Tuchel's 55-man provisional squad announced nearly a month ago. FIFA regulations require any World Cup replacement player to be from that provisional list, meaning even if injuries occur before England's June 17 opener vs Croatia, Ngumoha can't be called up.
The Liverpool teenager will still feature in England's final pre-World Cup friendly against Costa Rica on June 10. With the World Cup starting in the United States on June 11, Ngumoha's international involvement ends after that match unless selected for future squads.
Given his rapid rise at 17, will Ngumoha's exclusion motivate him to push harder for permanent England selection, or might he reconsider his international future with Nigeria's Super Eagles?
