Nigerian Catholic priest convicted in US for sexually assaulting women under his care
Nigerian-born Catholic priest Anthony Odiong, 57, convicted in Texas for sexually assaulting women under his spiritual care. Found guilty of one count of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of second-degree sexual assault by a jury of eight women and four men after two hours of deliberation.
Prosecutors proved Odiong exploited his position to manipulate vulnerable women seeking spiritual guidance. One victim testified Odiong initiated a sexual relationship while counseling her through divorce, with her son walking in on them during an encounter at her home. A second woman alleged the priest pressured her into sexual acts under the guise of spiritual guidance.
The case gained attention following a 2024 Guardian investigation that prompted additional victims to come forward. DNA evidence linked Odiong to a child fathered during his ministry in Louisiana. He was suspended from ministry in 2019 following earlier misconduct allegations. Sentencing begins Monday, with the first-degree conviction carrying a potential life sentence.
This highlights the vulnerability of people seeking spiritual guidance and the importance of proper boundaries in religious counseling. Those experiencing abuse should report it regardless of the perpetrator's authority position.
