Nigerian cities beyond Lagos build tech hubs, growing talent pipelines
Nigeria’s tech ecosystem is expanding beyond Lagos, with cities across the country building active tech hubs that train engineers and founders. Jos hosts two active hubs—NHub, Africa’s first northern tech hub, and Axia Hub—plus two more listed in directories. Akure has two active hubs: the Akure Tech Hub (TechUp) backed by Ondo State, FUTA and an NGO, and Sabi Programmers Tech Hub offering co‑working and training. Uyo’s two active hubs are Start Innovation Hub, partnered with Google and Facebook, and The RootHub, which evolved from co‑working to full incubation. Kaduna counts three active hubs: CoLab, whose alumni work at Microsoft and Goldman Sachs; the Kaduna ICT Hub run with Coders4Africa; and the Kaduna Quantum Innovation Hub. Kano reports about five to seven active hubs, including female‑led Blue Sapphire Hub, StartUp Kano Hub, EnovateLab and SparkLab. Ibadan features four active hubs led by Wennovation Hub, Stargate Workstation, Blockchain Innovation Hub and iBridge Hub. Enugu boasts four active hubs, notably Genesys Tech Hub with its zero‑tuition fellowship and state‑backed ESTHUB. Port Harcourt leads outside Lagos and Abuja with ten active hubs, highlighted by Ken Saro‑Wiwa Innovation Hub. Abuja hosts fourteen active hubs, anchored by Ventures Platform, Enspire Incubator and TD4PAI. Lagos still leads with over twenty active hubs, including CcHub, Vibranium Valley and TVC Labs.
These hubs create remote‑work talent pipelines, lower‑cost bases for startups and proof that innovation can thrive outside the commercial capital. They also signal opportunities for investors, policymakers and founders looking beyond Lagos for talent and lower overhead.
