Nigeria’s nine listed consumer goods companies held N587 billion in cash and cash equivalents at end‑June 2026, up 12.2% from N523 billion a year earlier. Their interest earnings rose to N31.08 billion in H1 2026, a 36.5% increase from N22.76 billion in H1 2025. International Breweries led with N171.08 billion, followed by BUA Foods (N149.52 billion), Unilever (N97.15 billion) and Nigerian Breweries (N74.63 billion), together accounting for about 84% of the total cash pile. Across the group, cash represented 9.78% of combined assets, up from 9.15% a year earlier, while for Unilever cash made up 55% of its assets.

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s recent cut of its benchmark rate to 23% could lower returns on deposits and short‑term investments when they mature, pressuring the interest income that has become a notable profit booster—interest contributed 22% of Unilever’s pre‑tax profit, 18% of Nascon’s and 16% of International Breweries’. Companies with high cash and low debt may see earnings squeezed, whereas heavily leveraged firms could benefit from cheaper borrowing.

What does this mean for you? If you hold shares in these manufacturers, watch how management balances cash reserves against debt repayment, expansion plans and dividend payouts as the interest‑rate environment shifts. Will lower deposit returns push these firms to use excess cash to pay down debt, fund new capacity, or raise shareholder returns?
