Nigerian fintechs Busha and Bitmonie now offer crypto-backed loans letting users borrow Naira using Bitcoin or Solana as collateral without selling assets. Busha provides up to 50% loan-to-value at 2% monthly interest, while Bitmonie offers up to 60% LTV for Naira loans. TransferXO expanded its similar product to Ghana in October 2025, reporting over $10 million disbursed with a 4.2% default rate.

This addresses a real need: Nigerians earning in Naira can access cash without selling volatile crypto or facing foreign exchange risk when repaying. As Bitmonie co-founder Olayinka Omoniyi explained, "If most of my income is in Naira, it makes sense for me to borrow in Naira" to avoid FX volatility compounding debt. Meanwhile, crypto traders like Blend's John Babodor use similar products abroad to borrow stablecoins for DeFi yield farming.

The broader crypto lending market is substantial - Galaxy Research reported $67.4 billion in global outstanding loans as of Q1 2026. However, debate continues over whether this remains a trader-focused tool or can go mainstream. South African players show varied approaches: VALR uses risk-based pricing without fixed LTV, while AltCoinTrader charges up to 7.95% annual interest with a 12% liquidation fee.

Key risks include liquidation during crypto crashes (where collateral sales may not cover debt, leaving borrowers liable) and regulatory uncertainty in Nigeria, which lacks specific crypto-backed lending rules. Startups source liquidity through own capital, investor funds, or debt pools, while managing collateral volatility.

Will you consider a Naira-denominated crypto loan to access cash without selling holdings, or do the liquidation risks and regulatory gaps make traditional lending products like Busha's and Bitmonie's too risky for your needs?
