Nigerian defence-tech Terra Industries secures record $52m seed round
On Monday, Nigerian defence-tech startup Terra Industries closed a $52 million seed round, the largest early-stage investment ever recorded for an African company. The two-year-old firm, which builds both hardware and software for protecting commercial and government assets, said it will use the funds to open a London office, expand manufacturing, deploy its solutions across the Global South, and hire engineering, operations and business-development staff. The round makes Terra the seventh most-funded startup on the continent in 2026 and follows two earlier raises this year.
For Nigerians, the deal signals that local deep-tech ventures can attract serious global capital even in a tight funding environment where many fintechs have struggled. It also highlights the growing importance of sovereign-grade security technology that keeps data within national borders—a capability that won Terra its first federal contract and gives it an edge over foreign incumbents. The scale of the capital brings expectations: investors will look for a clear path to exit, and the company must deliver on its promises to hire, scale production and win international contracts.
What does this mean for you? If you work in tech, engineering or defence, Terra's expansion could create high-skill jobs and partnership opportunities. For investors or entrepreneurs, the round raises the bar for what is considered a "seed" stage in Africa—will you adjust your funding expectations or seek to back similar home-grown innovations?
