Earlier today, Nigerian striker Peter Olayinka completed a permanent move to Saudi Arabian club Al Wehda on a free transfer after leaving Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia. The 30-year-old forward scored twice in 14 league appearances for APOEL Nicosia and has previously played in Czechia, Serbia, Cyprus and Belgium. His most successful spell came with Slavia Prague, where he won three league titles and three Czech Cups, and he also secured domestic doubles with Red Star Belgrade in Serbia.

This transfer highlights the growing appeal of Saudi Arabian leagues for experienced African players seeking new challenges and financial stability after spells in Europe. For Nigerian football fans, Olayinka’s move adds to the list of Nigerians plying their trade in the Gulf, potentially influencing future Super Eagles call‑ups as coaches monitor performances in competitive Asian markets. It also underscores the reality that many Nigerian talents continue to find opportunities outside traditional European leagues.

Will Olayinka’s success in Saudi Arabia encourage more Nigerian players to consider leagues in Asia and the Gulf as viable career paths, or will they still prioritize European clubs despite the challenges?
