Nigerian govt not protecting citizens in South Africa – Activist Idam
Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam accused the Nigerian government of failing to implement firm, lawful policies to protect citizens facing renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa. In a statement, Idam said diplomacy alone is insufficient and urged the government to adopt measures such as targeted fiscal policies, stricter regulatory oversight, or economic reforms that would make South African firms operating in Nigeria feel the consequences of attacks on Nigerians. He also noted that his lawsuit against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, a South African owned firm, remains undelivered because courts are preoccupied with pre‑election cases, undermining consumer protection efforts. Idam argued that South African multinational companies continue to reap huge profits in Nigeria while many Nigerians allege exploitative business practices, and that a swift court judgment would have demonstrated the state’s ability to defend citizens through the rule of law.
