Nigerian man shot dead in Pretoria bar after glass dispute, NUSA demands justice
Olatunde Olaleye, a 40‑year‑old father of two from Ikere‑Ekiti, was shot dead on September 21 at Spanata Bar and Grills in Mamelodi, Pretoria, after an argument over whether a drinking glass could be taken outside the bar. The Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) said the alleged shooter, a South African national, returned to the premises and threatened the bar’s management. NUSA President‑General Smart Nwobi described Olaleye as a husband and father whose death has devastated his family and called for a transparent, impartial investigation and for the law to take its proper course. This killing adds to a pattern of violence against Nigerians in South Africa. On September 4 and 5, Taiwo Fakunle and James Nwankwo were killed in separate incidents linked to xenophobic attacks, and on August 16, lecturer Ayodele Odularu was found dead at her residence in the Eastern Cape. Nwobi warned that Nigerians continue to lose lives under traumatic circumstances, urging the Nigerian diplomatic mission in Pretoria to strengthen talks with South African authorities and use all diplomatic channels to seek justice and improve protection for Nigerians living there. NUSA urged the Consulate‑General and High Commission in Pretoria to engage South African officials on the case and to advise Nigerians in the country to exercise caution, report threats to police and the mission, and stay informed through official channels. Families seeking consular assistance can contact the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria. The incident underscores the need for Nigerians abroad to monitor safety advisories and maintain contact with their home country’s diplomatic missions.
