Barnsley confirmed Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has departed Oakwell by mutual consent, subject to EFL approval. The 28-year-old joined the English League One club in 2024 from Portuguese side Chaves and made 30 appearances, including 12 league starts during the 2024/25 season.

Nwakali is now expected to link up with Cypriot club PΑC Omonia. This move represents a step down from England's third tier to Cyprus's top flight, raising questions about his trajectory after limited impact at Barnsley where he failed to secure a regular starting spot.

For Nigerian football fans tracking his international career, the transfer underscores the difficulty many face establishing themselves in higher European leagues. His next challenge will be earning regular minutes at Omonia to remain relevant for Super Eagles selection ahead of upcoming qualifiers.
