Nigerian startup Daya launches tokenised US stocks with $1 minimum investment
Daya, a Nigerian startup that built stablecoin‑powered payment infrastructure for African businesses, has launched tokenised stocks that let users buy and sell digital versions of US‑listed equities on the blockchain. The product, called Daya Stocks, is already live in testing and offers more than 400 US stocks and exchange‑traded funds, including shares in Nvidia, Tesla and the S&P 500 ETF, with a minimum investment of $1. Trading runs 24 hours a day and carries a 0.25 % transaction fee.
The tokens are issued through Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited, a token‑issuer backed by US‑based Ondo Finance. Ondo buys the underlying securities via US brokerage Alpaca and records them through the Depository Trust Company, maintaining collateral of at least 100.5 % of outstanding tokens. Investors receive blockchain‑based tokens that reflect economic exposure to the underlying securities; dividends are automatically reinvested after applicable withholding taxes and stock splits are passed through to token holders. However, the tokens remain locked inside the Daya platform and cannot be transferred to external crypto wallets.
Daya says the move expands its stablecoin infrastructure into wealth creation, giving retail investors fractional access to global markets without traditional brokerages. The firm plans to make money mainly from transaction fees, serve both retail users directly and businesses via APIs, and eventually offer tokenised Nigerian securities pending regulatory approval. The global market for tokenised financial assets could reach $2 trillion by 2030, according to McKinsey.
With tokenised stocks now joining a growing list of Nigerian crypto products, will you consider using blockchain‑based tokens to access US equities, or stick with conventional brokerage accounts?
